Federal Relief Package 2027

At the end of January 2025, the Federal Council opened the consultation process for the 2027 relief package.

The federal budget is to be reduced by CHF 2.7 billion in 2027 and CHF 3.6 billion in 2028 in order to cover rising expenditure on pensions and national defense.

The areas of education, research and innovation (ERI) could be hit hard by the cost-cutting measures. The representatives of the affected areas have formed and issued statements.

They are now warning against drastic savings because the proposed budget cuts of over CHF 460 million per year could have a significant negative impact on the Swiss education, research and innovation sectors.

Consultation Responses on the 2027 Relief Package

The area of education, research and innovation is calling for the cost-cutting measures to be carefully weighed up.

Despite cost-cutting measures, it must be ensured that neither the quality of education nor the promotion of research and innovation are compromised.

It is precisely in education, research and innovation that the Federal Council is proposing to save more than CHF 460 million per year and thus drastically reduce investment in vocational education and training, continuing education, universities and institutions that promote research and innovation.
